High Bents is an attractive cottage, tastefully furnished and decorated and equipped to a high standard in a wonderful setting high on the hill over the village of Gunnerside with fabulous panoramic views of Swaledale. It is an ideal base for cycling and walking holidays deep in "James Herriot" country and makes a superb weekend break!
The cottage which was converted from two adjacent lead-miners cottages several years ago, contains a new and well equipped large kitchen with gas range and stove; a comfortable sitting room with gas stove; bathroom with bath and shower. A second WC is provided in a utility/cloakroom; two staircases leading up to three bedrooms – one double bed & single bed, one twin and one single; and owners room.
Outside there is a store for 4-5 bikes and to the front a large flagged patio with picnic bench and BBQ facilities and the fabulous outlook over the dale.
Undoubtably one of the best, if not the best, views in Swaledale.
High Bents was bought by the current owners in 1969 when it was two separate cottages, one completely uninhabitable. There was no water, no electricity, no drainage, no loos other than the rather dismal one outside! Water was brought in by the bucket from the spring down the road and candles and calor gas lamps were used. With the use of a calor gas stove (and many other camping supplies) Bents was known as the stone tent. Over the years much refurbishment was undertaken – the second cottage was “re-built” and generated electricity, heating, telephone and several supplies of mains/spring water put in. Bents now has mains water and electricity, its own septic tank, LPG gas supply and Sky TV!

Local activities in and around Richmond, Yorkshire
Gunnerside village is a character village with pub, an excellent tea room and various visitor attractions. Two miles away up the dale is the village of Muker, another character village. It has an excellent pub, village store, tea-room and Swaledale woollens shop. Reeth 6 miles down the dale is a larger village with a number of small shops and a growing reputation as a craft centre. Over the Buttertubs pass into Wensleydale are the villages of Hawes, famous for Wensleydale cheese. The towns of Richmond and Leyburn are each 30 minutes drive and further afield there is Harrogate and the City of York – each approximately one and a half hours drive. To the west the Lakes and Cumbria are within easy driving distance of one hour.
The countryside is excellent for walking and cycling, particularly for those inclined to hills and something a little more challenging over the moors! There are many paths to walk in every direction and there are maps and details in the lounge at High Bents.
Gunnerside is situated on the B6270 between Muker (2 miles) and Reeth(6 miles), accessed from Scotch Corner on the A1 or J37 on the M6.

Guestbook
"We had a lovely week in High Bents, despite the strong winds and driving
rain. It is the perfect location on the edge of the moor above the
village. My wife was very impressed to find comfortable cotton sheets
and duvets plus electric blankets! And thanks also for the Christmas
tree!
All the best for 2008 and thanks, again.
" - Steve & Fiona
